Ground squirrels in Briones Regional Park, Contra Costa County, California, have developed a taste for flesh, turning into unexpected predators. This unusual behavior was documented by researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the University of California, Davis, as part of a long-term study on squirrel behavior.
Ground squirrels, typically known for their vegetarian diet of seeds and nuts, have been observed hunting and consuming California voles. This shift in behavior is believed to be driven by an explosion in vole numbers in the park. The researchers, led by Jennifer Smith, an associate professor of biology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, were initially shocked by the discovery. Smith and her team, known as “Team Squirrel,” made it their mission to document these hunting events using digital photography.
The study, published in the Journal of Ethology, highlights the adaptability of the California ground squirrels (Otospermophilus beecheyi). While these squirrels are mostly vegetarian, they are known to eat insects, eggs, hatchling birds, and even each other’s young. However, actively hunting adult mammals marks a significant shift in their behavior.
The team observed the squirrels hunting voles almost every day between June 10 and July 30, 2024, suggesting that this carnivorous behavior has become fairly common. This discovery adds a new dimension to our understanding of ground squirrel behavior and raises questions about the factors driving such significant changes in their diet.
