Biofluorescence is a process where an organism absorbs light, transforms it, and emits it as a different color. This phenomenon has been observed in various marine animals, but its presence in birds has been largely unexplored until now. Recent research conducted by scientists at the American Museum of Natural History and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has revealed that 37 of the 45 known species of birds-of-paradise exhibit biofluorescence.
The study, published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, utilized specimens collected since the 1800s. Using specialized photography setups with ultraviolet and blue lights, researchers captured the biofluorescent glow of these birds. The findings suggest that this special “glow” plays a crucial role in the birds’ hierarchy and mating displays, adding another layer of complexity to their already intricate behaviors.
Rene Martin, the lead author of the study, noted that the unique mating rituals and displays of birds-of-paradise have long fascinated scientists. The discovery of biofluorescence adds a new dimension to our understanding of these birds and their communication methods.
